How blue-violet affects human vision
Here you may perceive there to be four colors, when there are only three. This is because on certain backgrounds, the same color can look different, and vice versa. The back of your eye is lined with light-sensitive cells, including color-sensitive cone cells. Your cones affect each other in complex ways. When cones in one part of your eye see blue light, they make nearby cones less sensitive to blue. For instance, you may see a colored spot on a blue background as less blue than it really is. If you put a purple spot on a blue background, for instance, the spot looks a little less blue than it otherwise would.
In this case, the center block on the left side looks more dull than the right block, even though they are the same color.
