FAQs

Nix Print Pro

Do I have to purchase software to use the device?

No, your Nix Spectro L, or Nix Spectro 2 devices can connect to the Basic Nix Print Pro app. The Basic Nix Print Pro will allow you to get CMYK, density and LAB values. The basic Nix Print Pro will provide Delta E comparisons.

What is the difference between Nix Print Pro Basic and Nix Print Pro Premium?

Nix Print Pro Basic is ideal for spot color checks, color verification, CMYK builds and more. Nix Print Pro Premium is a full press side software with the ability to create color bars, load substrates, measure density with density correction feedback, dot gain information, job reports, job recall, trending and color library management. Nix Print Pro Basic is free. Nix Print Pro Premium is a subscription.

What is recertification and is it necessary?

Recertification is the process of sending your Spectro 2 back to Nix to validate that your device is reaching its full factory performance, and you will receive a new calibration and inspection certificate. Recertification is recommended every 12 months as the industry standard.

Nix Print Pro – Server

What is the Nix Print Pro Server?

The Nix Print Pro Server provides centralized color standard management and sharing for Nix Print Pro clients across desktop and mobile platforms.

The server runs as a background service and exposes a web-based administration interface for user management, while color library administration is performed through the Nix Print Pro desktop application.

  • Runs as a Windows Service by default
  • macOS and Linux builds are available on request
  • Uses HTTP (port 8080) for internal networks
  • Uses HTTPS when hosted externally

What are the Nix Print Pro Server System Requirements?

Minimum Hardware (Windows)

  • 64-bit Windows system
  • 4 GB RAM minimum (8 GB recommended)
  • Stable network connection
  • Static IP address recommended

Network Requirements

  • Port 8080 open for inbound web traffic (internal)
  • HTTPS (443) required for external access
  • Server reachable by all client systems

How do I install the Nix Print Pro Server?

Installation (Windows)

  1. Download the Nix Print Pro Server Windows installer
  2. Double-click the installer and follow on-screen instructions
  3. Administrative privileges are required
  4. The installer registers the server as a Windows Service
  5. The service starts automatically after installation

Default Credentials & First Login

The server installs with a default administrator account.

Username: Admin

Password: Admin

  • Credentials are case sensitive
  • Change the password immediately after first login

Accessing the Admin Portal (web browser)

Local access (from the server machine):

http://127.0.0.1:8080

Local network access:

http://<server-ip-address>:8080

Remote internet access:

https://<server-ip-address>

User Roles & Access Model

Standard User

  • Access shared color standards from Nix Print Pro on macOS, Windows, or supported mobile platforms
  • Read-only access to color libraries
  • No browser access required after setup

Admin User

Admins perform two distinct functions:

User Administration (Web-Based)

  • Performed via standard web browser
  • Create, modify, disable users
  • Assign roles and reset passwords

Color Library Administration (Desktop Application)

  • Requires Nix Print Pro on macOS or Windows
  • Create, edit, delete, and publish color standards
  • Cannot be performed via browser

Client Configuration

When configuring Nix Print Pro clients:

Local Network Access

  • Only enter only the server IP address or hostname
  • Do not include http://, https://, or port numbers
  • Internal servers assume port 8080

Internet Access

  • https://<IP-Address> or https:// <domain name>
  • Do not include a port number

Security & Network Considerations (IT Reference)

Application vs Browser Traffic

Some enterprise environments allow browser-based HTTP/HTTPS traffic but block non-browser applications using the same protocol and port.

Common causes:

  • Endpoint protection software
  • Application-aware firewalls
  • Proxy servers with application whitelisting
  • Zero-trust or EDR systems

Symptoms

  • Admin portal loads in a browser
  • Nix Print Pro client cannot connect
  • No obvious firewall errors

What IT Should Verify

  • Port 8080 (internal) or HTTPS 443 (external) is open
  • Traffic is not restricted by application identity
  • Nix Print Pro executable is allowed outbound HTTP/HTTPS access
  • Proxy rules permit non-browser clients
  • SSL/TLS inspection does not interfere with traffic

Recommended IT Description

“The Nix Print Pro Server is a standard HTTP/HTTPS web service accessed by both browsers and desktop applications.”

Troubleshooting Checklist

  1. Verify the server service is running
  2. Test local access: http://127.0.0.1:8080
  3. Test network access: http://<server-ip>:8080
  4. Confirm firewall and port rules
  5. Validate user credentials (case sensitive)
  6. Check endpoint security or proxy restrictions
  7. Confirm correct client configuration

KEY FEATURES

Nix Print Pro Server

Access shared color libraries hosted on a Nix Print Pro server.

To add a server bookmark, enter the server address, username, and password.

For servers hosted on a private network, the default port is 8080. In most cases, only the server’s IP address needs to be entered.

If the server uses a non-default port (for example, 8081), enter the address in the format:

http://<ip address>:<port number>

Example:

http://127.0.0.1:8081

Set Illuminant

Specifies the default CIE illuminant used when converting spectral measurements to CIE Lab values.

Supported illuminants include: A, C, D50, D55, D65, D75, F2, F7, and F11.

For printing and graphic arts applications, D50 is the recommended and default illuminant.

Set observer angle

Specifies the default CIE observer angle used when converting spectral measurements to CIE Lab values.

Supported observer angles include and 10°.

For printing and graphic arts applications, is the recommended and default observer.

Set measurement mode

Nix spectral devices, including the Nix Spectro 2 and Nix Spectro L, support measurement conditions M0, M1, and M2. The selected condition may affect the spectral and Lab values produced during measurement.

Choose the measurement condition that matches your workflow requirements.

M0 uses a traditional tungsten-based light source. Results may vary when measuring papers containing optical brightening agents (OBAs). Commonly used for legacy workflows and historical measurement data.

M1 uses a D50 daylight-equivalent illuminant and provides more consistent results when measuring papers containing OBAs. Recommended for modern print standards such as G7, GRACoL, and ISO 13655.

M2 reduces or eliminates ultraviolet (UV) light during measurement. This mode is useful for evaluating paper and ink colors without the influence of fluorescence caused by OBAs.

Set density status

CMYV density values are calculated for selected spectral references and all measured samples.

Select the density status that matches your regional standards and production requirements.

Nix Print Pro supports:

  • ISO Status T (commonly used in North America)
  • ISO Status E (commonly used in Europe)

Set Delta E Method

Specifies the Delta E color difference formula used when comparing colors.

For printing and graphic arts applications, CIEDE2000 (Delta E 2000) is the industry-standard recommendation.

Set QC Tolerance

Defines the color difference threshold used to determine pass or fail results when comparing a measured sample to a reference color.

Measurements with a color difference below the specified tolerance are considered Pass. Measurements above the tolerance are considered Fail.

Measurements within ±0.1 of the tolerance threshold are displayed as Caution and highlighted in amber.

Set Reference CMYK

Nix Print Pro can display CMYK values for both measured samples and reference colors.

CMYK values are calculated using an ICC profile and are dependent on factors such as the printing process, substrate, ink set, and press configuration.

Nix Print Pro includes industry-standard Characterized Reference Printing Condition (CRPC) profiles that can be used as a starting point or when specified by a customer, print buyer, or production standard.

Set Custom ICC Profile

Nix Print Pro supports importing custom CMYK ICC profiles for use when calculating CMYK values.

Imported profiles can be selected in place of the pre-installed profiles provided with the software.

Use a custom ICC profile when it has been created specifically for the printing conditions of your press, substrate, and production workflow.
